The Science of a Lost Art

Breathwork has its roots in Eastern culture, having been documented thousands of years ago. Breath control was first mentioned in writing in the Upanishads (700 BCE), a text from a late Vedic people in what is now Mumbai. Breathwork was known in many different cultures, but for a long time the techniques were only passed down orally. Access was limited to monks, spiritual leaders, other rulers, and the wealthy members of society. Breathwork was considered sacred and was practiced in ceremonies and rituals with the aim of achieving spiritual awakening.
Today, various scientific studies show that we can influence our nervous system through our own breathing. We can change every single cell within us. Not only can our heartbeat be regulated, but also our emotional state. We can not only control our emotional state, but actually change it. Our breath is the steering wheel of the nervous system – which is divided into the sympathetic nervous system (accelerator) and the parasympathetic nervous system (clutch). Yin and Yang. Breathwork activates the nervous system and develops new neural connections in our brain.
